Since 2015, the Consortium on Race, Gender and Ethnicity (CRGE) has organized the week-long Intersectional Qualitative Research Methods Institute (IQRMI). Few training institutes in the country focus on qualitative research methods and, currently, none incorporate discussions regarding the intersections of race, gender, class, ethnicity, and other dimensions of inequality.

The Intersectional Qualitative Research Methods Institute is the first of its kind in the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) and nationwide for intersectional early career scholars.

A Message from Dr. Ruth Enid Zambrana

IQRMI  will relocate to the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity under the directorship of Dr. Ange-Marie Hancock, who will direct and oversee future IQRMI programs. Her work and experiences are deeply rooted in the values of equity and inclusion, and an intersectional lens guides her work. We have observed the sense of community that she forged with the IQRMI 2024 summer cohort. Dr. Hancock will certainly continue to build the legacy of IQRMI and foster the next generation of scholars with future IQRMIs.

IQRMI for Early Career Faculty: June 1–6, 2025

A Letter from Dr. Ange-Marie Hancock

The Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity is delighted to host the 2025 IQRMI for early-career faculty here at The Ohio State University. While more application info will be available online soon, I wanted to express how honored and privileged I feel to have Kirwan serve in this capacity as a collaborative convener, a key pillar of Kirwan’s new strategic plan. Many of you recall what a rare and special space IQRMI has been for 10 years now; this year I was able to stay and soak up all the wisdom shared by Dr. Zambrana and the IQRMI faculty. I also had the opportunity to advise several 2024 participants in walkabouts, which was also a treat!

Dr. Zambrana and I met 20 years ago at a conference and have long respected each other’s contributions to the field. Intersectionality is of deep intellectual and personal interest to me. I have lectured at IQRMI each of the last two years and five years ago hosted the first global intersectionality conference during my tenure at the University of Southern California. Kirwan also serves as the intellectual home for over 30 early career OSU faculty who study race and social inequality across numerous disciplines. We are excited to see where there are opportunities for leveraging IQRMI’s history and Kirwan’s commitment to the work of providing intellectual communities of practice for deeply community engaged scholarship.

For now, please know that next year’s institute will take place during the traditional timeframe, June 1-6, 2025, on the campus of The Ohio State University. We are hard at work on pulling everything together for next year’s conference and look forward to sharing more information when it is ready!

In the meantime, if you have any questions about the transition, please send them to Tom Wike, Executive Assistant: wike.6@osu.edu.
