Kirwan Awarded OSU CARES Seed Grant for Near East Side Work

The Kirwan Institute, in partnership with OSU Extension, Franklin County, United Way of Central Ohio, Columbus Public Health, PACT and Columbus Early Learning Centers, has been awarded the OSU Cares Seed Grant to support an upcoming project focused on Columbus’ Near East Side. The project will expand on United Way’s place-based leadership academy, piloted on the South Side last year which aimed to provide space for residents to build skills for impacting neighborhood revitalization. For the upcoming Near East Side work, the model will be replicated and expanded to include a focus on social determinants of health and infant mortality, in hopes of tackling the troubling statistics that reflect Franklin County as having one of the highest infant mortality rates in the country, with racial disparities persisting for every cause of infant death. Community meetings are expected to begin mid to late summer of 2016.
