We are pleased to advise you that Arthur R. James, MD, associate professor-clinical, in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, has accepted our offer to serve as the interim executive director of the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity. Subject to approval by the Board of Trustees, his appointment is effective May 1, 2017, through April 30, 2018.
Dr. James joined our faculty in the Wexner Medical Center and Nationwide Children’s Hospital in 2011 and his practice includes women, families and their communities. In addition to addressing clinical concerns, Dr. James thinks that many of the contributors to poor pregnancy outcomes occur in the community and require community-based interventions to address the structural and social determinants of health. He works with patients, families, agencies, and State and local leaders to increase communication and coordination to reduce infant mortality and to eliminate the racial disparity in the rate at which babies die.
He currently serves as a consultant to CelebrateOne and is the co-chair of the Ohio Collaborative to Prevent Infant Mortality. Nationally, he is a member of the board of directors for the Centering Healthcare Institute, a member of the Health and Human Services Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Infant Mortality, consultant to the University of Illinois at Chicago Center of Excellence in Maternal and Child Health, and is co-chair of the Centers for Disease Control and March of Dimes EQUITY Action Group.
Among his many honors, he received the 2017 Ray Miller Crystal Stair Award, the 2016 Bridge Builder’s Award, and the 2015 Maternal and Child Health Bureau Director’s Award. Dr. James earned his medical degree from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, pediatric training at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and the University of Texas Medical School, and an OB/GYN residency at the University of Texas Medical School.
Dr. James’s experience, both locally and nationally, will inform his role in the Kirwan Institute. Please join me in congratulating Art. I look forward to working with him.
